So Long and Thanks for All the Fish

I have been using WordPress in o2js.com for a long time.

Then at a moment of epiphany, I decided to port everything I do to a Linux / Node.JS / MongoDB stack.

I have also created an initial setup that works for me.

And when I say “everything”, I mean it.

My decision also affects the fate of this blog.

In this post, I will clarify what will happen to this site.

So long WordPress, and thanks for all the fish!
You have been a great blogging platform, and I have to move on.

You can visit the new o2.js blog at blog.o2js.com.

It’s faster, minimalist, and it focuses on the content right away.

I’d really appreciate if you visit the new o2.js blog, and leave me a comment there.

So What Happens to This Blog?

Firstly, fear not. This is a very long transition process. This blog will remain open for years.
I will be…

  • Carrying all the posts in this blog to the new blog, one by one,
  • I will start from the most popular article first,
  • Adding a link to to the new content in the original articles,
  • After a couple of days, doing an HTTP 301 permanent redirect to the new articles,
  • Not shutting down this blog until everything is carried over.

One thing that would make this carry-over process long is I will be rewriting/enhancing/updating the posts as I copy them.

So the new content will be richer and better.

Another side effect is, I won’t be writing anything new to this blog, all new posts will be published on blog.o2js.com.

Dude! blog.o2js.com is Damn Fast!

It is, in deed ;) .

According to my tests, it takes approximately 3 seconds for this blog that you’re reading right now, until all the DOM content is ready.

That’s a long time! And some of the plugins that this blog uses wait for that time interval until they activate themselves; and that’s a redundant wait.

When you do the same test in blog.o2js.com, you’ll see that it reaches to a DOM Ready state in under 0.5 seconds!

That’s some progress ;) .

I have ideas to make it even faster; and that’s a topic of another blog post.

See Ya!

See you in the new blog.

I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as you enjoy this one.

Cheers!

Volkan.
